With a recent bathroom retrofit project, you can help HI
Chicago be more sustainable with every flush! We are currently in the process
of retrofitting every bathroom in the hostel with dual-flush toilet valves.
These dual-flush valves reduce water flow from the standard 3.5 gallons per a
flush (13.2 liters per flush) to 1.6 gpf, falling within the LEED
qualifications for a water-efficient toilet. Further, as the name indicates,
the dual-flush fixture has two distinct flush options: pushing the lever UP
will initiate the 1.1 gpf option, intended for liquid waste; pushing DOWN will
release 1.6 gallons of water, for solid waste.
With over 95,000 travelers staying in our hostel each year,
this retrofit project will significantly reduce water consumption,
providing an economically feasible solution to mitigate our impact on the
environment.
How can you help? Be sure to flush in the appropriate
direction: flush UP for liquid waste and DOWN for solid waste.
How can you conserve water in your own home? The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency established the WaterSense program to guide individuals towards high-performing, water-efficient products. Since its inception in 2006, the WaterSense program has saved over 487 billion gallons of water and reduced residential utility bills by $8 billion. Visit the WaterSense program website (link below) for a comprehensive list of approved appliances and start saving water, and money, today!
